Captain Carl Brown,
as playwright Carlyle Brown was known in the trade, was a captain of tall ships
and a specialist in outdoor adventure education. He was a senior instructor and
program director for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound Sea School off the
coast
of Maine. He has led and designed outdoor adventure programs for adjudicated
youth, youth at risk, prep school curriculum courses, business executive
leadership initiatives and general populations working both at sea and in
mountaineering environments. He was an on site safety inspector for Outward
Bound National and was part of a team sent by USAID to inspect and assess the
facilities, staff and programs of the East African Outward Mountain School on
the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya toward the development of systems and
methods for revitalization and support. As chief mate and captain of tall
ships, principally schooners, he has operated various sailing vessels for sail
training and the charter trade in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean
Sea. He was the proud owner of Edna, the last of the Massachusetts Bay
Knockabout sloops built in 1892. A BIG BLUE NAIL is dedicated to his friend,
